Rough diamonds

Independent on Sunday, The,  Aug 12, 2007

When I'm not working with my band Embrace, I spend about two hours on MySpace every day, listening to new music. It's like mining for diamonds. Ninety per cent of the bands are rubbish, but then I find a good one - woah, I can tell within the first 10 seconds. They just hit a nerve. I call my brother, my manager, my friends and get them to listen. Now I'm inviting my favourite new bands to play at my club night, The Aftershow.

Most bands burn brightest when they start out. Their work might become more mature and well-crafted - but those first songs will be among the best they'll ever write.

I've got a reputation for having a good ear. I heard Coldplay before they had a record out, and invited them to support Embrace. I did the same thing with The Doves and Travis. My latest favourite is The Ting Tings.

Danny McNamara is the lead singer of Embrace; The Aftershow, at Sankey's (www.theaftershow.net) starts 13 September.
