Coronation date chosen to avoid Derby Day

Winston Churchill vetoed one of the provisional dates for the Queen's Coronation in 1953 on the grounds it was unlucky, and another because it fell on Derby Day - a favourite event of the former Princess Elizabeth.
The National Archive documents, held secret for more than 55 years and released yesterday, reveal the then government's deliberations over when would be the best day to crown the young queen. The cabinet meeting, held in April 1952, eventually decided on 2 June, a Tuesday. AJ
