Flags of Our Fathers

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jul 15, 2007  by Nicholas Barber

Both of Clint Eastwood's overlong Iwo Jima films are now available: 'Flags of Our Fathers', which presents the battle from the American perspective, and 'Letters From Iwo Jima', which goes with the Japanese point of view. The Oscar-nominated 'Letters' was the more acclaimed of the two, and yet it's a fundamentally traditional war movie.

'Flags', on the other hand, scorns the hypocrisy of labelling every soldier a hero, and condemns the US government's treatment of veterans, so it was a bold statement for Eastwood to make during the "war on terror".
