'Must be some socialist baggage'

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jul 15, 2007

The commentators took sides in the war of morality between Gordon Brown and David Cameron over marriage and casinos.

Stephen Glover in the Daily Mail took the Prime Minister to task: "He won't support tax breaks for ordinary couples. This is not because they are a Tory idea - as Chancellor he nicked several of the opposition's better proposals ... My only explanation is that there must be some old socialist baggage." In the same paper, Lord Hattersley, former Labour deputy leader, hailed the ditching of casinos as "a good day for decency".

Fraser Nelson of The Spectator welcomed Mr Cameron's speech on the family as "authentic, strong, thought-provoking and laid out clear blue water between him and Gordon Brown ... [who] looks at this only in terms of children, whips his calculator out and declares them 'lifted out of poverty' having crossed some weird threshold."
