Frankly, the Queen should have known better

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jul 15, 2007  by Janet Street-Porter

Why did the Queen allow cameras to trail her for months for a documentary to be shown when she's 80? It was bound to end in tears.

Decades have elapsed since Eddie Mirzoeff's elegant films about the Royal Family for the BBC. What makes good telly in 2007 is confrontation. In the past year, we've had Gordon telling rookie chefs where to stick themselves on 'The F word', 'Embarrassing Illnesses' featuring surgery for piles and series about smelly and hairy people.

Television thrives on abuse. If you are getting on too well, crafty editors can rearrange footage to create maximum impact. Just as they did in the case of the Queen "storming out" of a room, when she was actually arriving in it. The Queen should stick to radio, state processions and garden parties.

Another mistake was having her portrait snapped by misery guts Annie Leibowitz. She makes fluffy Hollywood stars look even more vacuous. Clearly Annie thought the "Demi Moore" line of flattery would go down well. Big mistake.
