Shrek The Third (U, 93mins)
This summer's "three-quels" hit a new low with 'Shrek The Third', a tired, cynical potboiler which has neither the originality of the first Shrek film nor the jokes of the second. The screenwriters neglect to give any funny lines to Eddie Murphy's Donkey or Antonio Banderas's Puss In Boots and Shrek himself doesn't do much except fret about impending fatherhood.
When a Woman Ascends the Stairs (111 mins, PG)
Mikio Naruse's classic melodrama from 1960 is like a Japanese feminist answer to 'The Sweet Smell of Success'. Hideko Takamine plays one of 15,000 hostesses paid to entice businessmen into Tokyo's bars. Unlike many others, Takamine refuses to go home with her clients, but now that her bar and her kimonos are looking old- fashioned, she's running out of options.
Sketches of Frank Gehry (83 mins, 12A)
A chatty documentary about the architect of Bilbao's Guggenheim Museum. It's a genial introduction to the man and his twisty-turny buildings, even if the director, Sydney Pollack, spends far too much time telling us what close pals and kindred spirits he and Gehry are.
Shut up & Sing (93 mins, 15)
Barbara Kopple's documentary about the Dixie Chicks, the country'n'western stars bombarded with death threats when they dared to remark that they weren't too proud of their president.
