Electrical waste rules come into force today

Independent on Sunday, The,  Jul 1, 2007

New legal obligations to recycle old electrical products come in today as pressure mounts to reduce hazardous waste. The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) regulations mean retailers of appliances such as kettles, computers and mobile phones must offer customers a free take-back service, either in-store or through collection. Manufacturers and retailers who flout the rules will face "proportionate" action. Last year, two million tonnes of electrical waste were generated in the UK.
