Dusty Springfield

A 22-track survey of the BBC session career of the Moted One, from the bouncy pop twaddle of The Springfields in 1962 to her soulful effort, for DLT, in 1970, following her sojourn in Memphis. Most of it is terrific, as you'd expect. Few British voices have successfully crossed the rushy river separating pop from soul. Dusty's was a permanent bridge, nowhere better illustrated than on that final session for the Hairy Cornflake. And if too much of the material is compromised by the BBC sense of swing (and the jaunty introductions of dear old Brian Matthew), the voice carries all before it anyway. Now, go and buy 'Dusty in Memphis'.
