Meet Hadouken! - the leaders of the neon new school
Independent on Sunday, The, Jun 3, 2007 by David Hopkins
They've remixed Bloc Party, featured on one of the ober-hip French dance label Kitsune's compilation albums and they're also partly responsible for the growing sales of iridescent apparel and glow sticks.
Not bad for a band who have yet to record their debut album. The frenetic, genre-obliterating indie/dance (or "new rave", if you will) quintet hail from Leeds and are named after a console game character, exclamation mark and all. Catch them this summer on their first-ever headline tour of the UK, ahead of appearances at Reading and Leeds festivals.

'The first Hadouken! single 'That Boy That Girl' was so very amazing that the chances of them pulling a second decent single out of the Day-Glo hat seemed rather slim. However, against the odds, "Liquid Lives" is equally amazing.'

'The less said about seeing Hadouken! the other night the better. Maybe music is not cool any more and just creating a wall of impenetrable noise is. Other people seemed to enjoy them though. But I think people will go mad at any gig regardless of how poor the band is.'

'Love their energy. They're mixing several different genres and styles to get - what? Indie-industrial-dance-punk-grimey-rap? Hard to say. Feels fresh to me, and hooked my teen kids right away. Especially the "Bono Must Die" t-shirt the guitarist is wearing.'

'It was never a conscious decision to be revolutionary - that's just how things are now. None of them smoke, none of them just want to get pissed. They're all soon-to-be graduates who simply want to explain how they believe things should be.'

'It's danceable grime with a wit most of Britpop would sell their Union Jacks for. 'That Boy That Girl' is nigh-on genius: lyrics that'll make you laugh, and a beat that'll make you move. Voluntarily.'
