Emergency Design

Independent on Sunday, The,  May 6, 2007

Product designers are creating innovative items that help people deal with natural disasters. Climatised Objects, a project by &Made (www.and-made.com), explores the ways people use anything to hand to help them in an emergency. One such product is Either Oar, a wooden dining table that can transform into a life raft in the event of a flood; the legs can even be used as oars. Other objects include a vase that doubles as a flashlight if it hits the floor, and picture frames that illuminate when dislodged - useful if you're caught up in an earthquake.
