India's "living dead" have formed a political party to fight elections on 3 May in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Some 40,000 people in UP alone are estimated to have been falsely declared "deceased" by relatives, in cahoots with corrupt officials, so their assets can be stolen. Lal Bihari, 48, was declared dead in 1976 by his uncle, who then seized his property.
He formed the Mritak Sangh, or Association of the Dead, in 2004 after being "declared alive" once more by the government. "We know we cannot win elections," he says, "but through the election we can sensitise people and offi-cials about this problem."
