Radio: Land of the Mobile Millionaires

11am Radio 4

In 1962, a reclusive bachelor from a remote farming village in Finland died leaving a few hundred shares in a small company that produced rubber boots. His sole stipulation was that the shares were never to be sold and that the dividends were to be used "for the recreation" of residents of the local nursing home. Thirty years later, the old folk were millionaires. The rubber boot company was Nokia. It had diversified into the mobile telephone business and become the world's largest manufacturer. Matthew Sweet tells the extraordinary story. You couldn't make it up.
