Letter: A look at Lib Dems
Independent, The (London), Jul 31, 2002 by Earl RUSSEL
Sir: When Steve Richards (Opinion, 26 July) says "the Liberal Democrats are nowhere to be seen" one wonders where he has been looking.
If he had been looking at the House of Commons, he would have seen a campaign against what Charles Kennedy has described as "the meltdown" of care homes, which even Alan Milburn has begun to notice.
If he had been looking at the House of Lords, he would have seen what began as a one-party campaign in defence of asylum seekers which is now attracting support from the best and the bravest of all parties and of none.
Had he looked at our researchers he would have seen an exposure of techniques for answering parliamentary questions which highlights the pollution of impartial government by the growing court at No 10.
Had he looked in London, he would have seen the only political party which agrees with all the experts that the PPP on the Underground is capable of making Railtrack look like a success.
He would have seen the only political party consistently prepared to defend the underprivileged in property or in power - the only progressive party left in the country.
