THE BEST OF EUROPE

Independent, The (London),  Jul 31, 2002  by Abigail Sanderson

COTE D'AZUR

Henry Moore Retrospective

If sunning yourself in the Riviera hotspots begins to pall, this beautiful village, only 20 minutes from Nice, could hold the cure. In a tranquil hilltop setting, the Fondation Maeght has gathered together a superlative collection of Henry Moore's work, borrowing pieces from as far afield as New York. Ten bronzes in the gardens compliment the indoor display, which includes the early sculpture Head, and Reclining Figure: Festival, made by Moore for the Festival of Britain. A worthy addition to any holiday. Fondation Maeght, St Paul de Vence (00 493 328 163; www.maeght.com) to 5 Nov

FLORENCE

The Shadow of Genius

This major new exhibition celebrates the artistic legacy to Florence of Michelangelo, looking particularly at the work he himself did under the Medicis, alongside pieces by his followers (and rivals). More than 150 works are divided into nine sections - from "Father and Master of All" on the artist's influence on the Mannerists, to "The Court and the Citizens" picturing the ornaments of nobility in the Dukes' train. Palazzo Strozzi (00 39 055 264 5155) to 29 Sept

PARIS

Takashi Murakami

Be well and truly dobsmacked by this exclusive collection of the artist's work (left). Mr Dob - Takashi Murakami's alter ego and a superstar in Japan - forms the cornerstone of the exhibition, a blend of manga-, Edo era- and Pop art-inspired work. Other obsessions (mushrooms, vivid green eyes) are also represented. Fondation Cartier, 261 Boulevard Raspail (00 33 142 185 651; www. fondation.cartier.fr) to 27 Oct
