ARTS DIARY: What's bugging you?

Independent, The (London),  Jul 31, 2002  by KATY GUEST

News recently published in New Scientist about the unusual mating habits of ladybirds is troubling the author of The English Patient, Michael Ondaatje. In a recent talk in Australia, Ondaatje described reading that the male ladybird can spend up to four hours mating with a dead female before he realises he's wasting his time.

"I worry", Ondaatje revealed, "that this is a terrible metaphor for my writing."
