Letter: No pesticides in water

Independent, The (London),  Nov 11, 2001  by Michael Rouse

The article "Water - the most serious drinking problem of all" by Anastasia Stephens (4 November) contained inaccuracies. Ms Stephens claims that recent research found that "tap water contains up to 6,000 chemicals including pesticide residues, oestrogen-mimicking modules..." This is simply not true. There are stringent standards for tap water, including ones for pesticides, based on European directives. The Drinking Water Inspectorate has been enforcing these standards since 1990 and pesticides have been eliminated from tap water.
