Allan scoops dream ticket

Independent, The (London),  Jul 14, 1998  by Pete Swingler

WARWICKSHIRE Junior County player Allan Pengally gave up the chance of winning the Tipton Sports Academy Tennis Championship-for a seat at the Brazil-France World Cup soccer final in Paris.

Pengally, the former Streetly tennis club Junior champion, had to make a choice between tennis and soccer after winning two free tickets for the World Cup final in a national newspaper competition.

He wrote a winning entry about tennis and was given the tickets as his prize. But the final clashed with the Tipton Sports academy championships - the first of their kind.

Pengally said: "I beat Malcolm Keen in straight sets in the semi finals and I was due to play Nick Knight in the final. I then had to make a choice between tennis and soccer. I reluctantly withdrew from the tennis final because the World Cup was thedrea m of a lifetime I could not afford to miss. I went with my uncle and it was an amazing occasion."

Knight, the south Staffordshire champion who has won the Bilston Ratings Tournament for nearly 20 times, won the Tipton Sports Academy Final by beating Keen, of Wednesbury, 6-0 6-0.

Mark Henderson won the Tipton Ratings division seven final by beating Simon Johnson 6-3 6-4 in the final.

Johnson also lost the division six final 6-0 6-3 to Thomas Jordan.

In the women's section of the tournament teenage sisters Bethan and Katie Miles - the Hereford and Worcester county players - avoided playing each other in the final when Bethan lost to Charlotte Lines in the semi-finals. Katie won the final by beating L ines 6-1 6-0.

Both Miles sisters are taking part this week in the Solihull Arden International Junior Tennis Championship involving a record of nearly 600 competitors from around the world. Admission is free.

Holly Cockbill the 14-year old Warwickshire Junior County player, won four titles in the Sutton Hard courts junior Championship.

She beat Katie Eustace in both the Under 16 and Under 18 finals and partnered Katie to beat Emma Dearn and Claire Wilding in the doubles final. Cockbill won her fourth trophy by winning the mixed doubles final with Dean Coddrington.

Richard Thomas, aged 17 won the Under 18 championship and the doubles title with Edward Postlethwaite.
