Battered-woman activist dies
EMMA HUMPHREYS, whose campaign changed the law on battered women, has died aged 30. In 1995 she killed her lover, Trevor Armitage, who had beaten and raped her. Her conviction was reduced to manslaughter, making provocation a possible defence for those who kill violent partners.
