Rachel Moore
Rachel Moore's introduction to swimming came in the summer of 2002 when she tagged along with her brothers to the Cedardale Health and Fitness Center in Haverhill, Mass., and asked her mother if she could join the swimming team. Her mother said "yes," and the rest, as they say, is history.
Rachel's latest national age group record-breaking effort came last May at the SAC Memorial Day Meet in Springfield, Mass. She stepped up to the blocks and uncorked a 1:10.06 in the 10-and-under girls 100 meter butterfly to erase the previous mark of 1:10.14 set by Stephanie Rosenthal in 1983. Rachel also placed first in the 100 free (1:06.04), 200 free (2:25.80) and 50 back (35.89) at that meet.
Before that, Rachel posted a 1:01.54 in the 100 yard fly at the New England Open Championships (a senior meet). The time bettered Amanda Sims' 10-andunder NAG record of 1:01.62 in the event, set in 2000. In between her recordsetting swim and wins in Springfield, she found time to play the lead in her school's production of "Pete's Dragon."
She set several YMCA national marks earlier in the year as well. In February, she clocked 1:05.95 in the 10-and-under girls 100 yard IM, and followed that with three national standards at the YMCA New England Championships in March-100 yard free (57.19), 50 fly (28.33) and 100 fly (1:03.71).
Rachel is showing no signs of slowing down since aging-up to the 11-12 age group in June. At the New England 12-and-Under Age Group Championships in Cambridge in July, Rachel came in second in the 50 meter free (29.61), 50 back (34.37), 100 free (1:03.32) and 200 fly (2:40.51); third in the 200 free (2:19.04) and 100 fly (1:07.76); and fourth in the 100 back (1:15.52) and 50 fly (31.90) to place fourth in the 11-12 girls high-point standings.
