Cordeiro makes presidential march to Pro Gas title

LOS ANGELES COUNTY RACEWAY, Palmdale, Calif. (Feb. 16) - Ray Cordeiro, who at the end of last season took over as president of the Southern California Pro Gas Association, opened the new year with a huge victory over Chris Newman.
Michael Boner led the 49-car field in qualifying with a perfect 10.20 (10.20 index) from his Ford Thunderbird. Randy Fabbro was second and was followed by Jimmy Lintz and Larry Scarth.
After surviving the early rounds, Cordeiro stopped Bob Williams' Nova in the quarterfinals. In the semi's, Cordeiro logged a .004-over 10.20 to stop Randy Bowers, who broke out with a 10.16.
On the other side of the ladder, Newman, who last year finished second both in the Southern California Pro Gas and Super Street series, edged Jeff Agalsoff in the quarterfinals, 10.199 to 10.196, then beat Gary Mignacca in a double-breakout semifinal contest, 10.18 to 10.17.
The final was also a double-breakout affair, which 1996 series champion Cordeiro won, 10.15 to 10.14.
