Workshop on 'Nursing Administration and Supervision for Effective Patient Care'

The Trained Nurses' Association of India organized a week long National workshop for Nurse Educators, DPHNOs, ANS/DNS/Ward Sisters in Hospital/ Community/Education from February 2-9, 2005 at TNAI Headquarters.

The overall purpose of the workshop was to update and strengthen the knowledge and managerial skills of nurse practitioners working at various levels to enable them to render effective patient care. The objectives of the workshop were: sensitize the participants to the importance of modern nursing management techniques; review the principles of nursing administration; identify the factors influencing effective nursing care and supervision; discuss various styles and qualities of a nurse leader; recognize the significance of human relation in nursing management and promote human resource development in different areas of nursing practice.

Forty six participants from 15 States & Union Territories participated in the workshop. They were from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Orissa, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal.

The workshop was inaugurated on February 2 by the Chief Guest, Dr. A. K. Aggarwal, Director, IGNOU, New Delhi. The Guest of Honor Ms. Jaiwanti P. Dhaulta, former secretary General TNAI, Mrs. Satish Chawla, President, TNAI and Dr (Mrs) M. Dean, Vice President, TNAI graced the occasion. Mrs. Sheila Seda, Secretary-General, TNAI welcomed the dignitaries and the participants. Mrs. Nanthini Subbiah, Dy. Secretary-General briefed about the workshop and presented a brief insight to CEP workshop.

Dr. A.K. Aggarwal during his inaugural address expressed his happiness at being present on the occasion. He said that despite the best of our efforts, sometimes the resources are at stake in health care set up. This kind of workshop will help the participants to be effective administrators. He also expressed his concern about the communication and interpersonal relationships which are lacking now a days in patient care. He concluded his address by mentioning the virtues of Lord Ganesha which are ideal for Health Administrators. The Guest of Honor Ms. Jaiwanti Dhaulta while addressing the gathering said that the capability of a nurse administrator and supervisor has important bearing on enhancing effective care on patients. She added that there are notion of in born administrators and supervisors which can be true to the extent of aptitude such people may have, but effectiveness of their performance definitely depend upon their preparation and experience in management positions.

In her presidential address Mrs. Satish Chawla commented that the nursing profession needs young managers with vision, a vision which can ignite the young soul. Dr. (Mrs.) M. Dean, emphasized the need for coordination for providing effective patient care.

Mrs. Reena Bose, President, CNF and the guest invitee congratulated TNAI for organizing this kind of workshop. The inaugural session ended with the vote of thanks by Mrs. Evelyn P. Kannan, Asst. Secretary-General, TNAI.

Proceedings: After the inauguration, participants had an opportunity to attend a session on "Concepts of Modern Nursing Management" by Mrs. Annie MacMullan, Principal, Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi. During the ice breaking session in the afternoon, each participant was introduced to the group through a small game, which enabled the participants to overcome their inhibitions and mix freely with the group. This was followed by pre-test and over view of the workshop given by Mrs. N. Subbiah.

Dr. Rajini Bagga, Reader, NIHFW, New Delhi through participatory approach, covered the topic "Leadership in Nursing". Evolvement of Nursing Process in Nursing Management Techniques was dealt by Mrs. Rachel Andrews, Lecturer, College of Nursing, AIIMS, New Delhi. At the end of the session, participants shared their thoughts on this topic. "Delegation is a function of professional Nursing was discussed by Mrs. O. K. Kathuria, Ex-Coordinator, CEP, RAK College of Nursing. Ms. K. K. Gulani, Hony. Treasurer TNAI took a session on "Factors influencing effective patient care".

Third day of the workshop started with the session on "Organizing Patient Care in Hospital and Community" by Mrs. Anita Malik, PHN, School Health Scheme, New Delhi. "Techniques and Styles of Nursing Supervision" was taken by Mrs. Evelyn P. Kannan. This session was thought provoking,

The session on "Stress Management of Nursing Personnel" taken by Dr. Daisy Chauhan, Faculty, Institute of Management Studies, Gurgaon was quiet lively and left a deep impact on the participants. Mrs. Akila Devi, Sr. Tutor, Apollo School of Nursing took a participative session on "Human Resource Development in Nursing", This was followed by a quiet informative session taken by Ms. A. T. Kora, Nursing Superintendent, St. Stephen's Hospital, New Delhi on "Nursing Audit as a quality control tool. In the afternoon Dr. S.P. Chauhan, Programme Director talked to the participants on the topic "Communication and Inter personnel relationship in Nursing Management. Justice was done to the topic on "Ethical and Legal issues related to Nursing Management" by Mrs. Usha Malik, Principal, Batra College of Nursing, New Delhi. The sessions on "Principles of Modern Management and Supervision applied to Nursing" and "Six SIGMA" were taken by Mrs. R. Thassu, Chairperson, Continuing Education Programme Committee TNAI.
