6% homicide jump has link to drugs, gangs

Juvenile Justice Digest,  Jan 17, 2002

ACROSS THE STATES

The Los Angeles Police Department reported a 6 percent increase in homicide last year had strong links to drug gangs.

Most of the victims were black and Hispanic males in their late teens and early 20s with known ties to drugs, gangs or both.

LAPD said homicides increased for the second straight year after hitting a 30-year low of 425 in 1999. Despite the 584 murders last year, the total was still far below the record high of 1,096 in 1992.
