Mental Health Nursing, Nov 2006
People with severe and enduring mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are at increased risk for a range of physical illnesses and conditions, including coronary heart disease, diabetes, infections, respiratory disease and greater levels of obesity. They are almost twice as likely to die from coronary heart disease as the general population and four times more likely to die from respiratory disease.
This best practice document aims to help PCTs plan for, design and commission and monitor services that will deliver improved physical hearth and well-being for people living with SMI. It can be downloaded from the DH websrte: w www.dh.gov.uk/assetRoot/04 /13/82/90/04138290.pdf
