Mental Health Nursing, Nov 2006
Schema therapy is twice as effective as established psychodynamic approaches for borderline personality disorder, according to a new study.
The research compared two groups of Dutch patients treated with either traditional transference focused psychotherapy (TFP) or schema therapy, which combines cognitive behavioural therapy and an exploration of traumatic childhood experiences and the relationship between the patient and the therapist. After four years, 52% of those receiving schema therapy had recovered, compared with 29% of those on TFP.
The research was published in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.
