The face of madness?
This exhibition, to be held in the Atrium at the Institute of Psychiatry in London, is the latest display from Angela Rumble, whose work primarily looks at the depersonalisation of the individual by medical practice.
Angela studied fine art after originally training as a dentist and still works part-time in general practice. She combines the fields of art and health care and this experience is reflected in the subject matter of her artwork.
Some of the paintings to be shown at the Institute of Psychiatry are based on images from an early textbook of psychiatry.
She was struck by how 'normal' many of the faces look, particularly when seen without their captions. By separating the person from the diagnosis which defines them, she hopes to provoke the question as to how much or how little can be ascertained from looking at the face and how much labels affect attitudes.
This effect is increased by the inclusion of some doctors without any visual clues as to which are which.
The exhibition runs from 19 May 2006 to 23 August 2006 and is open to visitors from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Last admission is ideally at 4.30pm. External visitors are recommended to call in advance on 020 7848 0873. For more information, contact Emeline Reeves. Email: e.reeves@iop.kcl.ac.uk
