Confidentiality and Mental Health

Mental Health Nursing,  Nov/Dec 2001  by Jugessur, Tara

Confidentiality and Mental Health Christopher Cordess (ed) (2001) Jessica Kingsley ISBN 185302 860 6 Price L15.95 Pp 207

This book is well written at a level to interest a variety of audiences, from health care professionals, including nurses and social workers to family and carers. It is a very informative and well written book from mental health specialists and legal contributors. I rate this book highly. It is well structured with in-depth analysis of philosophical, ethical, professional and legal realities of confidentiality.

The content is comprehensive and logically structured so that the reader can address the many perspectives of confidentiality The introduction outlines the philosophical background of confidentiality and subsequently each chapter explores their particular approaches to confidentiality The use of personal experiences, case studies, and legal precedent cases bring the whole concept to life? reminding the reader that confidentiality is far from clear cut, and indeed, can be very tricky in complex cases.

Chapter seven, in particular, on the relationship between the psychoanalyst and the patient adds a further dimension to the complexity This book will be of interest to many mental health professionals including nurses and social workers.
