Call for atypical use

Mental Health Nursing,  Sep/Oct 2001

The government has been accused of running 'two tier treatment' in its attitude to the use of atypical medication, by the National Schizophrenia Fellowship.

The charity has been joined by MIND and the Manic Depression Fellowship in publishing new research about user choice and the availability of atypical antipsychotics.

The research shows half of those on atypicals have been offered a choice of medication compared to one in three on older drugs.

Two thirds on atypicals were given written information compared to 35 per cent on older medication.

The charities are arguing that user preferences are not being taken into account. The National Institute of Clinical Excellence is currently assessing the effectiveness of atypical and is expected to rule later this year.
