New guidelines to help universities deal with students' mental health needs have been published. The aim is to integrate universities and colleges' responses to students facing difficulties and equip staff and other students to lend support.

The new document explains the legal framework of equal opportunities, outlines the social context, offers a checklist and cites good practice at campuses around the UK. Meanwhile the Committee for Vice-chancellors and Principals (CVCP) has begun a nationwide study into suicide and self-harm by students.

In the absence of national statistics on self-harm and suicide, the new study will identify common factors and establish a baseline.
