Substance use and misuse: Nature, context and clinical interventions

Substance use and misuse: nature, context and clinical interventions

G-san RH od

Blackwell Science

ISBN 0 632 04884 0

This book provides a comprehensive text which is easy to read and full of current clinical interventions in the field of substance misuse. It contains many contemporary references and provides useful examples of practice interventions in the form of vignettes.

The 24 chapters divide into four sections and the reader may dip into any of these as individual components.

The breadth of the subject matter includes nurses located in many areas of practice, such as school nursing, practice nursing, accident and emergency and specialists in the field of dependency, to mention a few. This recognises the contribution and vital role of these nurses in meeting the complex and diverse needs of people using substances and experiencing problems of substance misuse.

Mental health and community mental health nursing is not addressed in separate chapters in the way other areas of nursing are. The chapter on dual diagnosis, however, addresses some of the specific concerns that mental health nurses may have, while other chapters are valuable guides for nurses in mental health, whether in the community or hospital setting.

This book is a welcome addition to the field but it may have missed an opportunity to enlighten some readers such as teachers, social workers, police and non-statutory services who also play a vital role.
