28 Security classifications up to NATO standard are offen (unclassified), VS-NfD (restricted), VS-Vertraulich (confidential), VS-Geheim (secret), VS-Streng Geheim (top secret). Unfortunately, their are some little innocent words which may precede this classification and the rules change. Their might be a preceding crypto, atomal, Auswertesache or COMSEC perhaps even an additional mark For *** eyes only or codeword. Working sheets were once stamped (green very common) as unregistered Geheime Ausertesache. Even if only the solution of the newspaper dailies crossword puzzle were written on it. HfW Frommer gives an anecdote on page 175 of Fernmeldebereich 70, 1971 - 1981 10 Jahre Ein Ruckblick. "I was the last working man in the whole department. As I was without a clock but had to register the end of working hours I phoned the building guard in order to request the time. The answer was: This block is subject to utmost secrecy and time is not allowed to be announced." While secrecy is necessary, secrecy for itself has no real meaning and there has often been to much secrecy even for practical daily work.
29 When I was preparing my Diplomarbeit and conducting research with the antenna group of the HF-Institut with Dirk Heberling at the RWTH Aachen on conformal microstrip antennas, we had a quotation on the wall: Antenna Theory in actual practice is
a) an exact science;
b) Black Magic performed by a group of people in a backroom who never have heard of Maxwell's equations; c) a ritual performed by group of engineers who believe they understand Maxwell's equations and pray to strange gods to help them solve the mystery of the state of the art.
30During a discussion with a member of the cryptanalytic department at the Federal Army Intelligence Agency, the author concluded that the methods of historians are quite similar if not identical to those of the intelligence business. The decisive difference is that historians give the public access to their results in form of scholarly books, papers and briefings. Even that is done by the intelligence members but a much more exclusive audience.
