1 Communication Intelligence and Signal Intelligence was set up by the Organization Gehlen under American Control including cryptanalysis since 1947. Cryptanalysis of diplomatic and high grade military cryptosystems was the task of the cryptologic branch of Organization Gehlen. In 1956, Organization Gehlen was transferred from American to more-or-less German control and renamed as Bundesnachrichtendiens (BND) Federal Intelligence Service (FIS) of the German Foreign Intelligence Service.

16 The German term Fernmeldebreich is literally translated as signal area which does not reflect the complete German understanding of Fernmeldbreich. In common practice Fernmeldeberich is not translated and only if absolutely necessary addressed in English as German Air Force SIGINT Analysis and Evaluation Center. The Acronym GAFSIGINTAEC does not exist and the author uses throughout the text the German term Fernmeldebereich. As expressed in the anniversary booklet 40 Jahre Fernmelderegiment ch 72, 35 Jahn Standort Feuchtwangen, the designation most appreciated is and was Fernmelderegiment, signal regiment.
