Human Events, Mar 17, 2000 by Gizzi, John
In the Northern California district that Campbell has held since 1995, a former aide who shares Campbell's views on most issues, State Assemblyman Jim Cuneen, will carry the GOP banner. National Democrats point to the district's history of voting Democratic and have made it one of their top targets nationally Archliberal state legislator Mike Honda, personally recruited for the race by House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt (Mo.), was the easy winner of the Democratic nomination.
The other vacant House district in California-the 48th (Northern San Diego and Southern Orange County)---wis considered the safest for Republicans in the state. With nineterm Republican Rep. Ron Packard calling it quits, Vista industrialist and 1998 U.S. Senate candidate Darrell Issa topped two other conservative GOPers-State Sen. Bill Morrow and property manager Mark Doman, son of former GOP Rep. (1976-82,1984-96) Robert K Doman.
