According to the NTU, 68.6% of Americans preferred "cut spending by 4.3% for all programs except Social Security and Medicare" to the option that Congress "raise taxes" (favored by 9.4%). "Use money in the Social Security Trust Fund to pay for current federal programs" garnered 8.1%. "For the better part of the 1990s, politicians have raised the budget bar by spending tax dollars far faster than the rate of inflation:' said NTU President John Berthoud. "The verdict is already in: A modest across-theboard program of spending restraint is the best way for Congress and President Clinton to clear their remai ig budget hurdles."
CATHOLICS &DOGMA: The Catholic
League for Religious and Civil Rights has obtained 300,000 signatures on a petition to Walt Disney Co. head Michael Eisner demanding that Disney separate itself from Miramax, a film distributor. Miramax was going to distribute the controversial-film Dogma, which many consider blasphemous, but after Disney ordered it not to, Miramax executives Harvey and Bob Weinstein decided to distribute it personally.
