'Let's deal with real elections first, OK?'
Human Events, Sep 29, 2000 by Gizzi, John
That is what convention delegate Jalene Andrews of McCloud, Calif., told me when I inquired about the race to succeed John McGraw as party chairman, scheduled for the next state convention in early 2001.
When Northern Californian, McGraw was elected two years ago, he was vigorously opposed by moderates who denounced his across-the-board conservative philosophy and his statement that abortion was "the issue of the century." Under party rules, the next chairman must be a Southern Californian, and since the vice chairman usually is moved up to the top job, the favorite is current Vice Chairman Shawn Steel, a Los Angeles lawyer and a conservative stalwart since his teenage days in Young Americans for Freedom.
Moderates make little secret of their desire to block Steel, and their most likely horse is former state legislator Brooks Firestone of Santa Barbara, a pro-abortion, pro-homosexual, anti-gun Republican who last year drew 42% of the vote against Steel in the vice chairman race., Greeting fellow conventioneers last week, the grandson of tire magnate Harvey Firestone made it clear he had not decided on a bid for chairman against the frontrunning Steel. Minus Firestone, moderates say, their candidate for the party helm may well be Los Angeles travel agency queen Noel Irwin Henstchel, who lost the GOP nod for lieutenant governor in 1998. But all of the contenders and most delegates downplayed talk about the next battle for party control and appeared to agree with Andrews: The party has a "real" election to deal with first in November.
