Will Katie Couric's sister go statewide?

Human Events,  Nov 26, 1999  by Gizzi, John

Although the landslide reelection of liberal State Sen. Emily Couric was no surprise to Virginia voters and pols, the big question immediately after her win was will the lookalike sister of "Today Show" hostess Katie Couric now try to take her semi-celebrity statewide and seek the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor in 2001 ?

If she did, she would be the first woman on either major party's statewide ticket in eight years and, given her wellknown name, most observers think Charlottesville Democrat Couric would be an asset to a gubernatorial ticket almost sure to be headed by cellular phone magnate Mark Warner, the 1996 U.S. Senate nominee. With incumbent Gov. Jim Gilmore (R.) forced by the state's one-term limit to step down in two years, a strong GOP fight for succession is already brewing between Lt. Gov. John Hager and State Atty. Gen. Mark Early.
