Illegals Protest for Amnesty: Only in America

In the Folk era, I loved Woody Guthrie's song "Deportee" about the plight of the migrant workders. Now, the cover of the April 3 issue of HUMAN EVENTS ["Call Them Gate Crashers"] shows Pasadena high-school students carrying signs declaring: "If you think I'm 'illegal' because I'm a Mexican, learn the true history because I'm in my homeland." The arrogance of this lie boils my blood.

President Bush conspired with Mexican President Fox at the Rio Conference to allow more illegals into the U.S. and give them amnesty. ... Bush calls them "guest workers," but since a guest is someone willingly invited, the illegals are more accurately called "invaders." The press calls them "immigrants," but this is an insult to the group most outraged by the illegals: the Hispanics who immigrated legally, taking the Loyalty Oath of U.S. citizenship. Illegals state they have confused loyalties. If they want the benefits of U.S. citizenship, there should be no confusion of loyalty. They need to take our oath legally.

The "true history" is that Mexico seceded from Spain in 1821, California seceded from Mexico in 1836, and the USA paid Mexico $15 million to purchase California, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming and Colorado at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo of 1848. Let's tell the illegals what the "true history" is.

I just realized I owe all illegal immigrants an apology. Since I had been a grass cutter for 30 years, 1 am just now finding out that for those 30 years, I took a job that seems to have been reserved for illegals.

To compound my guilt, during those 30 years I had been hiring help at a living wage and therefore hired English-speaking Americans, once again denying illegal immigrants their employment domain. How thoughtless of me to pay competitive wages for all those years. Perhaps I should apologize to my past customers.

When I had trouble hiring help, it was not a deficiency in the wages offered, it was that the welfare system in those days had the unintended consequences of not making it worthwhile to leave the ranks of the unemployed. Just look at France to see what we almost became if it was not for welfare reform.

We do not have mobs in the street complaining about an opportunity to get a job, as in France, but we have mobs in the street demanding amnesty from being held accountable for breaking our laws and demanding citizenship. Only in America!

I am an American-born Hispanic who loves this country, its English language, and its traditions and history.

I oppose illegal immigration and anyone who hires them, and believe that the only way to mitigate this problem is to go after businesses, small and big, that hire illegals. Put the fear of going to jail and paying a huge civil fine into these business who are cheating the American labor force and the government treasury. Also, build that damn wall separating us from Mexico.

I'm sick and tired of these Hispanic organizations making me look like a fool in front of my fellow Americans. I'm tired of my wife being looked at, as pregnant as she is, as if she is an illegal. She is a brownskinned American-born Puerto Rican.

I'm sick and tired of the GOP, my party, kowtowing to these illegal immigrant advocates as if the illegals vote (or perhaps they do in Democrat cities). I vote, and I vote conservative, so if the GOP thinks it's going to win me over just because I am an Hispanic, guess again. Whosoever is on the conservative line will get my vote even as I'm a registered GOPer.

Ann Nails the Truth About Austin

Ann Coulter rules! There is no other way to put it. I live in Dallas, but her description of Austin ["Liberal War on Terror Heats Up: DeLay Finally Captured," HUMAN EVENTS, April 10, 2006] was spot on:

"To finally get some grand jury to hand up an indictment, Earle had to empanel six grand juries in Austin, Tex., which is like the Upper West Side with more attractive people."

I about fell out of my chair laughing.

Keep up the good fight, Ann and everyone else at HUMAN EVENTS.
