A History of the Maghrib in the Islamic Period
Journal of Third World Studies, Spring 2000 by Abraham, A J
Abun-Nasr, Tamil M. A History of The Maghrib in The Islamic Period. Great Britain: Cambridge University Press, 1993. 455 pp.
The present volume of Jamil Abun-Nasr's classic study of North Africa (Ar. al-Maghrib) supersedes all previous editions due to the rapid growth of studies on this long neglected region of the Islamic World. The present study, recently reissued, bears the marks of newly included material as well as revisions of the original text.
The pre Islamic period of North African history which was included in the 1971 edition remains omitted as is the history of Egypt, but the early conquest of the area is treated much more comprehensively than in past editions. And, an epilogue brings the work up to date surveying the early post independence period.
This book remains the best study of North Africa in that it remains the only major detailed work on the subject. Its value is immediate for both students of African History and Middle Eastern Studies.
