Brass Rubbing, Poets' Corner
Anglican Theological Review, Fall 2005 by Maddox, Marjorie
Within this Abbey's
ornate double triforium,
magnificent cross of arch and tile-
ah, here's the rub
of rhyme and ritual,
headstone replicas rented out
to half-literate tourists
eager to re-create in wax and brass and paper
a lost era of poets held in prominence
within these gold and holy walls:
Chaucer, Browning, Milton, Burns,
the Bard himself, knights all
of form and line, regal in the resonance
of memory's recitation,
ready for an Icon's worth of veneration
in this side hall, footsteps from the High Altar.
In the beginning was the Word.
