Des Moines Home Loan Bank getting new president

After nearly 35 years with the Federal Home Loan Bank System, Thurman C. "Sam" Connell has retired as president of the Des Moines bank, as of June 1. Patrick J. Conway, executive vice president of the Home Loan Bank of San Francisco, has been appointed the acting interim president.

Connell was named president of the Des Moines bank in July 1987. During his tenure, bank membership grew to more than 1,000 community financial institutions from 154 members in 1987.

In the Federal Home Loan Bank System, Connell played a leadership role, serving as president of the Conference of Presidents of the 1 2 banks. In 1 997, he was instrumental in the formation of the Washington, D.C.-based Council of Federal Home Loan Banks, which coordinates activities and provides legislative support for 10 of the 12 Home Loan Banks.

Conway has 30 years of broad-based business experience. He has been with the Home

Loan Bank of Son Francisco since 1 975, assuming management positions of increasing responsibility and serving for nearly eight years on the executive committee. From 1969 to 1975, Conway was with Merrill Lynch.
