thursday mornings

the boys off at gym class

we gathered inside a square of sun beads clicking

as the woman we called sister

moved and talked

about growing and bleeding

about flesh curving into breasts

she said nothing about make-up or fashion

high heels, nylons, anti-wrinkle cream

this woman in the dark

cotton dress

it was safe

in that fifth-grade classroom

to say

this body is for me
