Follow these steps to plant like a pro. By Rebecca Bull Reed
Go anywhere near a garden center, and you'll see the colorful array of planting possibilities. Before you buy more annuals than you can fit into the back of the family ride, consider where you're going to plant them. Landscape pro Joey Bischoff of Hanceville, Alabama, offers this advice.
1. Start by deciding on your location and removing all grass. If the area is large, spray with a nonselecdve herbicide such as Roundup at least one week prior to plandng.
2. Loosen the existing soil by turning it with a shovel or tiller, but don't rake the ground smooth just yet.

3. In a wheelbarrow, mix together 1 part composted cow manure or mushroom compost, 1 part pulverized bark or soil conditioner, and 1 part good-quality topsoil. Blend well with a hoe so that the mixture is uniform.
4. Dump the amendments onto your planting space, and turn them in with a shovel or tiller. Rake smooth while forming a raised mound. Just prior to planting, sprinkle with a slow-release fertilizer. We used Dynamite All-Purpose 18-6-8, which is an environmentally sustainable product.
