All That Glitters
Southern Living, Mar 2008 by McKinney, Wanda
You have to really be looking for Sterling Silvia to find it. But the small shop, wedged among the T-shirt and gift boutiques that line the street just across from New Orleans's French Market, is well worth seeking out. The merchandise-mostly sterling silver jewelry and gifts-leans heavily toward the fleur-de-lis. This lily-shaped symbol of New Orleans stands for the rich French culture and religious traditions that fill the area.
Ever since Hurricane Katrina left destruction all along the Gulf coast, owners Juan and Silvia Asturias have added to the fleur-de-lisjewelry they offer for sale. Items-many of which are crafted in Taxco, Mexico; Bali; and Thailand from Silvia's own designs-begin at $25. Daughter Cristy's pieces, including a New Orleans Rebuilding Hands pendant, begin at $50.
