Making of Mardi Gras, The

Southern Living,  Feb 2008

Where do all those floats originate? Right here, across the river from downtown New Orleans, in an enormous complex of fun.

King Kong. Marilyn Monroe. Cleopatra. Amazingly, they are all congregated in one place, waiting for you. Not to mention a 140foot-long sea monster or two and glowing paddleboats twinkling with miles of fiber optic lights. And all for fun!

Ever wonder where those flamboyant Mardi Gras floats come from? Don't miss the chance to visit the carnival of color and light at Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World, where the New Orleans party begins.

Raining Purple, Green, and Gold You'll find these brilliant colors throughout this incredible place, located just a free ferry ride away from the French Quarter. Purple represents justice, green stands for faith, and gold is for power. You can see this kaleidoscope of the world's largest fleet of carnival floats and watch artists paint and ready them for the big parades leading up to Fat Tuesday. It's open year-round. Note: Many floats will be in parades the weekend just before Mardi Gras, so plan your visit accordingly.

The Crowning Touch

After oohing and aahing at the gigantic floats, props, and costumes, watch a video that explains the history of Mardi Gras. Then try on one of the fabulous costumes to feel like king or queen of the ball. There's free coffee and king cake too. Check out the gift shop to find your own Mardi Gras beads, T-shirts, CDs, and cookbooks. Let the good times roll, cher!
