Good Food-Southern Style

Good Food-Southern Style

Atlanta boasts a groaning board of gourmet restaurants, yet these home-style eateries earn high marks too. Your yen for comfort finds satisfaction here. Pull up a chair and dig in.

* When the sun rises over the Buckhead neighborhood, the power breakfasts get serious at OK Cafe. Hearty morning meals include omelets, cereals, and French toast. Later in the day, the more casual customers come for the blue plate specials. Crab and crawfish cakes, meatloaf with Creole sauce, and pot roast cozy up to sides of collards, fresh corn, and cucumber salad. 1284 West Paces Ferry Road; www.okcafe.com or (404) 233-2888.

* The toughest decision of the day at Mary Mac's Tea Room is to choose cornbread or yeast rolls. Our suggestion? Ask for both. Then plunge into the rest of the menu at this 62-year-old eatery. It boasts 27 entrees and 32 sides-the meat 'n' two (order three if you wish) runs about $9. The peach cobbler ($2.95) makes this a sweet, sweet meal. 224 Ponce De Lean Avenue; www.marymacs.com or (404) 876-1800.

Extra Comfort

Discover more tasty meals at these other Atlanta restaurants.

* Busy Bee Cafe: 810 Martin Luther King Drive; www.thebusy beecafe.com or (404) 525-9212. Line up at lunch for fried chicken in gravy. This is the best place for chitlins (November-January) and ham hocks (anytime).

* The Colonnade Restaurant: 1879 Cheshire Bridge Road; (404) 874-5642. Favorite menu items such as turkey and dressing and fried chicken are served at this 80-year-old mainstay.

* Thelma's Kitchen: 302 Auburn Avenue; (404) 688-5855. The only cafeteria on our list makes crispy, tender fried chicken legs and thighs. You'll walk out licking your lips after tasting Thelma's sweet potato soufflé.
