keep a cool head

Southern Living,  Jun 2007  by Mills, Suzanne Powell

Say "no" to scalp burn with these simple solutions.

You don't have to have a receding hairline to experience a sunburned scalp. The painful process of combing hair after a day at the pool is proof enough. Here's how you can protect everything on top of your noggin this summer.

pre-sun smarts

Before soaking up the rays, use moisturizing shampoos or conditioners so your scalp won't feel too dry. Take care of your hair as well, because too much sun can affect it also. Consider a trip to a salon to make sure your hair is healthy and has no split ends.

hats on

Covering your head is the easiest way to protect it. Look for hats with wide brims that can also shade your neck and shoulders. For straw hats, get extra protection by wearing a scarf underneath so sun rays won't penetrate the holes. If you still prefer your favorite baseball cap, remember to keep sunscreen on your ears and shoulder area.

lather up

When you're ready to play, a hat isn't always practical. New scalp protection products are a popular alternative, but not the only one. Try combing a little sunscreen (at least SPF 15) through wet hair. Or mix it with a bit of conditioner to keep hair moisturized. Whatever you use, remember to reapply during the day.
