Connect The Dots With Flair

Southern Living,  Feb 2007  by Mercer, Amy Bickers

Splashes of color and a dash of pattern give this home a warm, eclectic appeal.

Take a cue from a favorite cocktail garnish. We found a room as tangy as a green olive stuffed with pimiento. Just as the sweet red pepper balances the sour olive, rich red is a perfect partner for zesty green walls.

Work With It

Rather than pulling out the brushes and paint cans when he bought his Stuttgart, Arkansas, home, Gary Morris decided to work with the green walls. He added a strong shot of red and a bit of black for a tasty concoction.

Fun With Polka

A theme doesn't have to be over the top. Sometimes creating one is as simple as repeating the same graphic element throughout a room. Gary found an armchair upholstered in a zippy dot pattern. Serendipitously, he came across a polka-dot art print framed inside two pieces of glass. Leaning against the mirror above the fireplace, the silver frame almost disappears. Another fun find is the polka-dot lampshade. The lesson: Always be on the lookout when shopping.

Make Room for Display

It was "Crater Face" in Grease who said, "The rules are there ain't no rules." Whether you're drag racing to the bridge and back or decorating, this dictum is worth following. Gary didn't allow the built-ins to rule his design. He just removed several shelves and made space to lean a tall framed print on one side and a large decorative platter on the other. -AMY BICKERS MERCER
