Beautiful Custom Style

Southern Living,  Dec 2006  by Hamilton, Julia

Elements adapted from Scandinavian design flavor this distinctive living space.

The owners of this Dallas home are proud to trace some of their family heritage back to Sweden. When they traveled to Scandinavia, they were particularly attracted to architecture and furnishings found in the homes they visited. In a new family room addition planned for their own home, they re-created a bit of that style.

Architect Richard Drummond Davis designed a large, open space that features ceiling beams and a fireplace wall at one end. The textured wall finish in this new room closely mimics the plaster surfaces found in the original 1920s house. A niche to the right of the fireplace holds a tall case clock. On the left stands a TV/storage cabinet that furniture designer Paul Johnson created to follow the curve of the arched wall recess. Designer Suzy Kaye says, "For the cabinet we chose a rust red finish that is particularly Swedish and usually found on the exterior of houses."

Two antique Swedish chairs retain their original red-and-cream upholstery; newer ones are covered in a checked pattern. New crystal chandeliers crafted in Italy are modeled after European antiques. A custom, hand-forged Repoussé steel-and-copper fire screen made by Potter Art Metal Studios repeats some of the floral details found in the chandelier. -JULIA HAMILTON
