Jazzy Savannah Nights

Southern Living,  Sep 2006  by Thompson, Annette

My three favorite nightspots heat up when the sun goes down in the historic district.

"The soft glow of lamplight settles over Savannah's squares, and it's time to seek out a bit of nightlife. Each of these taverns entertains in a distinctive style that tops off an evening with plenty of pleasure.

Suave and Sophisticated

Located in the Mansion on Forsyth Park, Casimir's Lounge matches rich decor with excellent aperitifs and cocktails. The tavern's gold-trimmed velvety-dark walls provide a backdrop for fanciful art. In one corner a pianist or jazz ensemble often soothes guests with sounds as smooth as the martinis. Fend off hunger with dishes delivered from 700 Drayton downstairs.

Best on menu: Raspberry martini ($10) and calamari with sweet olives in a tomato concassé topped with Parmesan ($11).

Where the Locals Go

Jazz'd Tapas Bar, the most lively place for drinks, music, and food, transforms an old five-and-dime just off downtown's Broughton Street. The professional crowd celebrates here Tuesday through Sunday when modern-day crooners and upbeat musicians deliver Sinatra-infused tunes. (There's no cover charge.

Best on menu: Tapas for Two, which includes a soup or salad course, four tapas (appetizer-size servings), two desserts, and nonalcoholic beverages ($50). Our picks include she-crab stew and barbecued shrimp and grits.

Dueling Dares

Grab a table in the dark-box bar dubbed Savannah Smiles Dueling Pianos Saloon down in a riverfront warehouse. Multiple keyboardists bang on the ebony grands with bawdy twists that keep guests belly-laughing at their irreverent jokes. They also play and sing all the rock 'n' roll standards during interludes on their off-color routines. Expect to pay a $5 cover charge.

Best on menu: Simple cocktails and ice-cold beer-come prepared to send up tips with song requests.
