Wake Up Your Walls
Southern Living, Aug 2006
Here's a creative way to display artwork in a narrow space.
Even the slenderest slice of wallspace merits a special treatment. With a collection of prints that are similar in appearance and size, you can tailor a wall grouping to fit the tightest area.
When Leslie and John Simpson built their home, they included a wonderful feature in the living room-handsome French doors that open to a sunny terrace and flower garden at the front. The installation of the tall stained wooden doors created a narrow wallspace that the Simpsons made into a decorative asset. They hung a set of small, framed botanical prints in a vertical row that accentuates the height of the room. With the addition of a small table, a lamp, and a pair of antique French chairs, this inviting spot is perfect for sitting and enjoying the garden views.
Framing Points
* Choose a group of prints with a similar theme, such as animals, shells, or figures. Frame the series identically using a thin, simple molding.
* Consider mat color. Match the wall, and the grouping will blend in with its surroundings; choose a contrasting hue for greater emphasis.
French doors open to the garden. A row of framed prints adds a botanical touch to the living room. The tall lamp echoes the proportions of the arrangement of prints.
