Southern Living,  Aug 2006  by Floyd, John Alex Jr

Dear Friend,

Our annual "Idea House" special section is always a favorite of mine. I really enjoy seeing how all of the professionals who work on the three houses make each one unique. This year, especially, I think the houses contain some of the best ideas we've ever featured.

We are joining with our parent magazine, The Progressive Farmer, to present a special Idea House in Tallahassee, Florida. Forty years ago when Southern Living started as an outgrowth of the living section in The Progressive Farmer, farming was the main livelihood of the South. Today, a growing number of city-based Southerners want to savor a taste of farm life. They would like a small bit of acreage to enjoy being close to the land. Planter's Retreat is a good example of this New Ruralism.

Our Idea House at Daniel Island in Charleston, South Carolina, salutes the best of Lowcountry style. Inside, the designers have demonstrated how to use fabric to separate spaces, among other things. Plus, Robert Chesnut, one of our favorite garden designers, has given the home's landscape his distinctive look.

From Charleston we move westward to Cedar Creek, located near Bryan, Texas. The floor plan is designed to change as a family evolves. Ideas abound here, too, but I especially like the private patio off the master bedroom and the wonderful separate guest retreat. (The special section starts on page 89.) Hopefully, what you see-thanks to the building teams and our national sponsors-will inspire you to plan a visit. The Florida and South Carolina houses are open through October; the one in Texas is open until November. If you would like a more detailed preview, visit southernlivingideahouse.com.

Isn't it a bit of a shame that, for many of us, school starts in August nowadays? But, if you're looking to squeeze in one last summer trip before getting back to the daily grind of the school year, our Travel department has selected a few two-day escapes, starting on page 18. To help with meal planning, the magazine's Foods staff has developed a great series of quick supper ideas for those busy school nights (see page 160).

I hope you enjoy all the ideas featured in this issue, and I hope they help you enjoy the good life. Happy reading.

Best regards,

John Alex Floyd, Jr., Editor
